My name is Blue, and I am the creator of IWantTutoring.com.
I have been a professional private math tutor for 25+years, and I love my job!
In my 25 years of tutoring, I found two things to be true.
1) Not enough people in the world knew they could make a living as a private tutor.
2) Not enough people in the world knew how to find a private tutor.
With those two ideas in mind, I set out to create IWantTutoring.com. A website designed to connect students anywhere with tutors everywhere.
As a private math tutor, not a semester goes by when I don’t get a request from a student or parent asking me if I tutored another subject or knew of a tutor who could tutor that subject. I get asked about stats, physics, accounting, upper-level math courses, chemistry, if it has numbers in it, I get asked about it.
Occasionally, I will meet other tutors in these fields, and I am able to refer students to the right resource. However, there are some courses that I have never met a tutor for that subject. I know those tutors are out there, I just don’t know how to find them, and they may not know a student is looking for them.
It was this idea of connecting students with a need to tutors who could help them with those needs that IWantTutoring.com was born.
The traditional methods for connecting students and tutors have gaps. The first major gap was that the finding process was only a one-way street. Tutors post their information, and students find that information (hopefully). I wanted to close the gap between how tutors and students find each other by adding a second direction to the traditional method. Instead of only having tutors post about their services for students to find, IWantTutoring.com also allows students to post their needs for tutors to find. Creating a two-way street for connecting students and tutors.
The second gap that I wanted to remove was the need for tutors in all communities, especially smaller rural communities. Students all over the world would benefit from access to tutoring, however based upon their geographic location, some students have little to no access to tutoring services. Tutors all over the world are looking for students, however based upon their geographic location there might not be enough students in need of their specific skills, or the demand is low because of an overly large supply of tutors in that specific skill. Again, by allowing both students in need, and tutors with skills to both post about themselves, students anywhere could connect with tutors everywhere.
As I looked around at other tutoring platforms, I found issues I would correct on IWantTutoring.com.
First, there are many websites out there that want to take cut out of every tutoring appointment that you schedule through their website. Some sites will take 25% (or more) from every tutoring appointment you schedule through their website. They essentially act as an intermediary taking a piece of every dollar you make as a tutor. IWantTutoring.com works to connect tutors and students. After we have done that, we step aside and let the tutor and student work everything out.
Second, some platforms are very passive in how they engage the community. You list your information there, and the platform makes no effort to help find students who need tutors. We actively advertise and personally reach out to student and tutor communities to ensure both groups know about the opportunities available on IWantTutoring.com.
The last piece I wanted to add that other websites had lacked was to provide training and consulting to tutors. You may want to be a tutor, but don’t know how to get started. I am here to help you with that, and answer all your questions. You may be someone who has been tutoring, and want to know what you can do to enhance or expand your services.
